Agriculture and Food

The agricultural heritage and tradition of quality produce is at the heart of Borders life.

Unsurprisingly, given the natural environment and commitment to quality, the Scottish Borders produces some of the best quality assured beef and lamb in the country. There are many organic and rare-breed producers across the Borders supplying shops and restaurants locally and further afield.

Some of the country's main suppliers are based in the region, including Glenrath Farm Eggs, Greenvale AP, Farne Salmon and Trout & Philip Wilson Grain.

With a strong record of innovation in the industry, the Borders also remains a stronghold for industry co-operatives, including Borders Machinery Ring, Scottish Borders Produce, Farmstock, and the East of Scotland Growers co-operative.

Established in 2006, the Scottish Borders Food Network involves local food businesses (producers, hoteliers, restaurateurs and food shops), committed to developing and showcasing the region’s food.

Rural Development

The Scotland Rural Development Programme (SRDP) is a programme of economic, environmental and social measures, worth some £1.5 billion, designed to develop rural Scotland from 2007 to 2013.

Individuals, businesses and groups may seek grant aid support to help deliver the Government's strategic objectives in rural Scotland.
